Spancil Hill這首歌緣自名為Spancil Hill的詩篇，作者Michael Considine出生於1850年，1870年前後從Spancil Hill移民到美國，他的部分親戚也移居到了美國，但仍有壹部分留了下來，例如他五個月大的侄子John。Michael去美國後努力工作，希望能把自己 的愛人也接過來並完婚，可惜他至死都沒能存下足夠他愛人移民的錢。他的愛人在最早版本的詩篇中說的很清楚，是“巡邏兵的女兒Mack（Mack the Ranger’s Daughter）”，而非現在的流行版本中所說的“農夫的女兒Ned（Ned the Farmers daughter）”，她就是Michael青梅竹馬的愛人Mary MacNamara。Michael在波士頓工作了兩年左右後去了加利福尼亞，在很長壹段時間內飽受疾病的折磨。覺得自己將不久於人世，他寫下了這篇 Spancil Hill，並寄回家鄉愛爾蘭，以此紀念自己的愛情。Michael於1873年逝世，有人說他最後葬在了SpancilHill，但也有人說他被葬在了加利福尼亞。而他的愛人Mary MacNamra則終身未嫁。
