Long Ago in China, people were afraid of Nian, the dragon beast.
很久以前的中國，人們很害怕壹種長得像龍的野獸，叫“年”。
Nian had a sharp horn and a huge mouth.
年有鋒利的角和壹張大嘴。
He could eat five people in one big bite! Glump!
他壹口就可以吃掉五個人。啊嗚！
All year long, Nian slept deep in the ocean.
壹整年，年獸都睡在大海裏。
By the end of winter he was very hungry.
到了壹年快結束的時候，年獸會變得很餓。
Each year, just before the Chinese New Year, Nian would climb out of the ocean.
每壹年的中國新年之際，年獸會從大海裏爬出來。
He would look for people to eat.
年獸會抓人作為食物。
Nian liked to eat children best.
年最喜歡吃小孩子。
People would run away and hide in a cave.
那個時候，人們都會跑到山洞裏躲起來。
One New Year's Eve, a very old man came.
有壹年的除夕，壹位老人來了。
He said he could scare away the beast.
他說自己可以嚇跑年獸。
No one believed him so they hid in the cave.
人們不相信他的話，紛紛躲到洞裏。
That night, people heard boom, bang, and clang.
那天晚上，人們聽到“劈裏啪啦”“轟隆隆”的聲音。
They heard Nian roar.
他們聽到年獸的咆哮。
On New Year's morning, the old man was gone.
新年的早晨，老人離開了。
Nian was gone, too, and he never came back again.
年獸也走了，再也沒有回來過。
The old man had left a bag for them.
老人留了壹個包給他們。
Inside, they found red shirts, fire crackers, tin pans and sticks.
裏面有紅色的衣服、爆竹、錫鍋和木棍。
Nian was afraid of noise and the color of red!
年獸害怕噪音和紅顏色！
Now, on New Year's Eve, people know how to keep Nian away.
現在，在除夕夜裏，人們知道了怎樣來驅趕年獸。
They wear bright red, light firecrackers, and make noise all night long!
他們穿著紅色的衣服，點燃爆竹和鞭炮，壹整夜都劈裏啪啦響個不停！
