戰國時思想家孟子所著《孟子》和西漢初年劉安（前179-前222）編成的《淮南子》都說他是被恩將仇報的徒弟逢蒙暗害的。暗害的手段記載各不壹樣，有的說是用桃木大棒打死的，有的說是用暗箭射死的。總之這位蓋世的英雄死在陰謀家的手裏。
